| Welcome to Costa Rica
| | | | | Sept . 6 Morning and afternoon walk through the forest . Often we find Avocados or fruit on the ground. Everybody enjoys the abundance offered in the jungle.
| | We're starting from the foundation. Wood delivery delays have set back the framing and our first weeks group will help with framing and planning the wall infill method.
| | For the wall infill we look at local materials: clay soil, coconut fiber , bamboo. We try different mixes and methods in a test panel. | | From the neighbors land we get an aerial view of our site.
| | ...we arrive at the beach from the worksite | | Sept.9 We call it coco loco, "crazy coco" : the coir fibre is mixed with clay-slip and wrapped around the bamboo . Spaces will be filled with cob. | | The coco loco crew for the first 7 days! | | At the end of week one we're still waiting for wood. Our fill method is being streamlined and we're leaving the site with a tarp to cover - you never know when the storm will come.
| | Sept. 18 Moving along nicely- three exterior walls are framed, the bamboo is going in and the first piece is filled with cob. We are still changing our methods as we discover how things work.....
| | ...now we weave the coco around tighter spaced bamboo. this will make the wall lighter again and reduce the amount of cob needed. | | Minor and Eladio have joined us in the mud work. They have been working on the land clearing for a while and they now learn this building method- maybe one day they'll build their own house.
| | when lunch arrives everyone is happy | | | |
